Where to vacation in San Marino

San Marino sights

San Marino is a tiny country in Italy. It is an oasis of freedom, where you can recharge your batteries through close contact with nature, discover the culture, including delicious food, as well as explore the architectural creations. The latter are not to be missed, not just for their originality, but also for their sheer opulence.

San Marino Basilica

The Basilica is the main religious site in the city. It has a neo-classical style which makes it stand out from the other buildings in the vicinity. It has a covered gallery based on 8 columns of Corinthian order. Additional decoration is the inscription written in Latin.

It is nowadays a World Heritage site. Under the altar, inside you can find a small urn containing a part of the saint’s relics. They were received at the end of the 16th century. A number of neat paths branch off from the church. Thanks to them it is possible to reach other iconic places in San Marino.

Montale Tower

San Marino is famous for its splendid towers. One of these is the Montale, which stands 7 metres high. The structure once served as a prison. Prisoners were lowered into a deep well in the rock. Today it is not possible to enter it, but the tower itself is accessible.

The image of Montale can be seen on a coin in the denomination of one cent. The tower itself is characterised by its pentagonal shape. When you reach the top you can admire the extraordinary panorama of the area decorated by nature itself with various plants.

Best sights in San Marino

Palazzo Poglico

San Marino is a tiny state. But it has its own political centre. It is located in the Palazzo Poglio. It is a government building used as the town hall. It is also used for important ceremonies, VIPs and decision-making processes.

The town hall itself has the appearance of a traditional fortress, but it is well protected. There are originally shaped windows, a balcony and a neat tower. The tower is decorated not only with the flag of San Marino but also with a large clock face.

La Cesta Tower

San Marino has the amazingly beautiful peaks of Monte Titano. In addition to natural treasures, there are creations of human hands. One of them is La Cesta Tower. Less than 1 day is enough to see it. The tower stands on a lush green hill and is only accessible from one direction.

The protective structure was also used as an observation tower. The activity could be observed from different directions from here. The stone structure is impressive in its massiveness and the approach is not easy.

Guaita Tower

Another “tower” landmark in miniature San Marino is the Guaita Tower. It is also perched on a hill overlooking the vast expanse of the state.

The tower is also known as the Prima Torre. It dates back to the 11th century and was used as a defensive structure. Its stone walls are so strong that they still stand humbly atop the hill.
